Learning Log - January 30, 2012

Learning Log for January 30, 2012

Hello everyone! I know it’s kind of late. You probably all know that this is Trevor’s day to post just like we discussed in class, but due to unforeseen reasons (Trevor being at his grandparents’ house) I will post instead... and we will sort this out later.

What We Did Today

Today started out as a very confusing day. By this I mean walking through the halls on the way to Humanities only to have my bag pulled by William. He then told me that class was in the library and that Ms. Lees had just told him. To be honest, I wasn’t sure whether to believe him or not but I just went anyways. In the library we were all milling around trying to decide whether it was the right thing to have trusted William. But, he was right so everything was good.

We settled down at our tables in our blog groups and discovered that we would again be critiquing our blog posts with a partner (who could, this time be from another group).

We filled out a group sheet which consisted of our past goals and if we had or hadn’t met them at this point in time. After setting 3 more goals to accomplish in time for mid-February we split up into partners to critique our individual blog posts.

It took about half an hour to forty-five minutes for most of the class to finish up analyzing two posts for each partner. After we had finished we headed back to our table to say our farewells, although it wasn’t as sad as it sounds ;)

Why We Did It

We had to look at our blog posts again to constantly monitor the quality that we are putting out. Keeping consistent and improving is really the trend you want to see as you keep writing.

We’ve also said this many times but it won’t hurt to say it again. Working together, whether it is in a big group or small group, helps to improve your social skills. Being able to get along with many different people is totally helpful as you get older and start to interact. Getting a job, and making acquaintances wherever you go can prove useful in the near future. Especially now since people are talking less and texting more, it’s easier to make a good impression on someone who is more used to hurling words through cyberspace, than through air and straight to somebody’s ears.

Connections and Reflections

I think I’ve pretty much covered the reflections in the “Why We Did It” section so I’ll just do reflections.

Today I saw how much I need to improve in my writing! I need to watch out for my occasional typo and read through everything I’ve written before I post it. And I have to watch the tone that I use when I post. It’s a bit casual.

Homework Tips and Reminders

© I’m sure that you have all finished your Chapter One and Two questions for There Will Be Wolves. If not you can find them here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CdvCf34RMshmw1UTrkxT3xn3gsTv-uCI2ws1RJzhxPM/edit?pli=1

Ii it doesn’t automatically link (it should!) then just copy and paste. My apologies because I’m not really a person who’s good with computers.

© We are presenting our webs tomorrow so you just might want to think about what you learned from your book (Sword Of The Rightful King, Crispin, The Samurai’s Tale, etc.) and what you learned from working in groups.

© If you need to, refresh your memory by watching the shopping cart video. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M66ZU2PCIcM

See you all tomorrow! I think we can keep the schedule the same but Trevor and I can switch days. We’ll talk more about it tomorrow.

Tomorrow our dear friend Shanese will be posting an extravagant Learning Log so don’t miss it!

*Shanese if you can’t post just tell us somehow and we’ll arrange for someone to post for you!*

Hey guys sorry but i can post today because I'm at my grampa's and gramma's parents house

Learning Log for January the 17th

what we did:
On January 17 we worked on webs with our groups. That was the second day we worked on webs and Ms lees said they were due on Wednesday January 18.

Why we did it:
We were working on the webs because they were due the next day(but the real reason was to get better at group work like getting tasks done when your group needs them, giving people more ideas and to get better at listening to others ideas

Connections/Reflections:
My Reflection is the class worked well in class and most people had good progress on their webs but some people did finish their notes or forgot their book ect.

homework:
>To come to flex on Thursday
>finish notes
>finish any work from term one
____________________________________________________________________

Learning Log January 18th

what we did:
On January 18th we were spose to have a little time to do our webs and then we where spose to hand them in to the teacher. Instead we marked some geography tests from before Christmas (the tests where from our class and the block four class). Then we got like 20 minutes to work on our webs. The webs due date was extended to Friday because we were marking the geography tests

Why we did it:
We marked the tests because the subs who marked them didn't add up the marks so we had to take the marks from each page and write the total down on the bottom corner,Then add up all the marks to make a total. The reason we did the webs was to improve our group working skills
and so we have stuff to do in class.

Connections/Reflections:
The class did well on Wednesday i think most of us where listening to Ms. lees and marking the tests. Then in the group work for twenty minutes we all where working hard and on task.

homework:
>post on blog
>hand in paragraphs if not yet handed in
____________________________________________________________________
Learning Log January 20th

What we did:
On Friday the class finished all the webs in half the class then we watched a video about how a group of people mod a shopping cart to make it easier to shop then we talked about why they did so.

Why we did it:
We watched the video because it show us something cool you can do with a shopping cart.It also showed us that that with team work you can do anything and that the skills that Ms. lees is teaching us right now (which is sharing ideas with others and listen to other peoples ideas)will help us later in life with our jobs

Connections/Reflections:
On Friday the class was on task at the beginning but toward the end some people weren't listening. The reason why we watched the video was basically to show us that what we do in class can relate to people who work and use the same skills as what we are learning

Homework:
>post
>watch the video (link to it is right here>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M66ZU2PCIcM
>finish any term one stuff

Missing Post!!!!!!! PLEASE READ!

Hey everyone! Trevor hasn't posted for a couple days now. He spoke to me today at lunch and said that he can't get into blogger. I think we all should speak to him in class tomorrow and figure out his missing post and our schedule for next week! :)

Learning Log Friday January 16th

What we did today:
Today the class worked on the rough draft of the webs we are doing and some started on there good drafts

Why we did it:
The point of doing the rough draft was to plan out where all the information and pictures will go on the good copy .Also so we can play around with different designs and themes for the web.The point of the good draft is to show how we have improved from the rough draft.\

Connections/Reflections
A connection of how webbing can help us later in life. Example your starting a business and you need to see where your company will have offices and what you company will do and how much it will cost. In that case you could create a web. Then you could think back to grade 8 and say thank Ms lees for webbing skills

Homework:
>finish paragraph editing
>finish good copy of paragraphs
>get lots of notes for your web
*dont forget flex is on thursday*
POSTING NEXT IS MEE YAY

New labels!

I put a label for everyone so you can view what you posted easier.

Learning log Jan 11

What We Did
During the first block, we got into our novel groups and worked on our historical webs. We had to set the headings as a group based on the information the novel gives us and split the headings among us according to our strengths. It was productive for some and some just goofed off.
During the second block, we looked at our paragraphs that we wrote in November. We had a check list and a rubric which we had to fill out while we looked at our partner(s)'s paragraphs.

Learning Intentions
We are doing the webs because it is to organise information using a visual format, and lets us connect things. It also makes us think more because we cannot just read the book but we have to understand it as well. It is a good chance to practice your social skills whether it is being a leader, accepting other's ideas, sharing ideas, or compromising. It is also good practice for us to learn how to concentrate with distractions(which most of us failed to do).
The paragraph editing was to let you(the author) see the mistakes you've made and how to improve. It also tells us how to write better paragraphs because the people stronger at writing can teach the weaker ones how to do things. It lets us see what is actually a good paragraph and what is not. It tells us where we are at compared to the rest of the class.

Connections/Reflections
I think that I did OK during the first block because I did get some things done. However I did goof off a couple of times. The second block i was really focused as I liked reading the paragraphs and getting the feedback. I finished all the editing in one block.
The webs are really useful for any kind of visual organization and also communication skills. As Sara has mentioned in her post that it is a really important skill to have. The paragraph editing was to let you see how to edit and look at your own work so that whenever you write something you can edit it.

Homework
  1. finish the editing of the paragraphs and print(double spaced Ariel 12 font) or write out the good copy. remember, you do NOT have to take all the suggestions you partner gave you.
  2. post!
  3. if you have not finished the Pathway notes, finish it ASAP during flex or set up a time with Ms.Lees
  4. work on the novel web

Trevor has the honor to post tomorrow! good luck!

Congratulations Sara!

You made the geography challenge finals! Thursday you will go to your second block class after lunch for attendance and then go to the library for the test. The finals are usually shorter so you will not miss your whole class. Good luck and bring a blue and red pen with you.

LEARNING LOG~Jan.10/2012

What we did today

Today was a fun, peaceful and challenging day! First thing in the morning we started with Geography Challenge. Ms.Lees gave us a package which had 9 rounds. The rounds were about mind mapping, locating and labelling, food, transportation etc...! This took pretty much the whole entire block.

Learning Intention

The learning intention today was to see what we know about the world. Though we didn't learn some of the questions it was nice to see how much knowledge we had. I didn't think that I would answer some of the questions. It refreshed my memory :)

Connections/Reflections

The Geography Challenge was quite challenging. Some of the questions were quite difficult. I didn't even understand some of them. If you don't know the answer at all it's always good to guess. There is no right and wrong answer. This is a good way to get our smart "brains" working ;)!

Homework/Tips

- If you haven't finished your pathway notes finish them at flex on Thursday
- Look over the rubric for tomorrows double block
- Finish your portfolio at flex on Thursday
- If you aren't finished your paragraphs I suggest you should finish because tomorrow we will be doing some editing
- You may want to skim through your novel
GOOD LUCK TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING THE GEOGRAPHY CHALLENGE TEST ON THURSDAY! WISHING THE BEST TO YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow Trevor will be having the honour posting on double block:) Good luck!
******I know my learning log was a little short but we didn't do much in class********

Learning Log- January 9, 2012

Learning Log ~ January 9, 2012

What we did today:

Today was a peaceful day that was quite enjoyable actually!

We started out with a few rounds of Geography Challenge. There was one particularly interesting one called “It’s Party Time!” about different festivals and celebrations all over the world. It was kind of fun to see what we got right and wrong although my best score is 4/10 from an earlier round. After, I think, three rounds of Geography Challenge we forged ahead and got right to Concept Mapping/Mind Mapping.

We all had to copy down notes about the criteria, the organization, and reasons why they are useful graphic organizers. Ms. Lees then handed out a few sheets, two consisting of a web evaluation rubric (how we will be marked and what we will be marked on) and a peer evaluation rubric for Wednesday when we edit a friend’s rough draft of their paragraph. But we’ll be talking about that some other day in class .

Why we did what we did:

We did what we did today because somewhere along the line, we will actually have to use this stuff!! Seriously! Anyway, we did our Geography Challenge for the actual Geography Challenge that we will take tomorrow... bright and early !J

We took notes about important details that we needed to know so that when it comes time to start our book group webs, there will be no surprises if we didn’t get our desired marks. These webs are very important. Not only are they quick way to organize info, but it also helps us to make connections with the information that we’ve gathered.

Working in our groups helps us to boost our communication and collaboration skills, getting us more comfortable with talking to our friends and acquaintances (I think Trevor has already mentioned this in one of his posts). By collaboration, I mean problem solving peacefully, giving constructive criticism, having a fair distribution of work, being open minded, and working as a team. Remember that there has never been an “I” or “U” in team, and there never will be!

Connections and Reflections:

I usually start with reflections first, but today I thought I’d shake it up a bit J Here I go!

Having social/collaboration skills will help us later on in life, especially when we enter into the “real world” and we start working. Bosses are obviously not going to look for the biggest grouch to make the whole office grumpy with a storm cloud on top! Although they may be persuasive in a way, that’s not the type of leader that they want. They want somebody who is capable of influencing their colleagues for the better instead of the other way around.

I think it’s really good for our class to be able to practice our social skills in this manner because there’s usually at least one person that you sort of know. These types of activities just make it easier for everyone to get to know each other better, faster!

I used to be a really shy person up until high school, I guess I just realised that I couldn’t live in my own bubble with my own friends forever. It was always sad to find out that my friends weren’t in the same classes as me, but it’s a good thing that other people were more friendly, outgoing, and willing to make new friends than I was. I hope this social trend continues for me!

Homework:

© If you really want to, you can study for the Geography Challenge, it’s tomorrow by the way!

© Ms. Lees said to look over the web rubric for Wednesday.

© If you haven’t finished your portfolio you should go to FLEX which is on Thursday, or contact Ms. Lees to schedule a different time if you can’t make it.

© If your paragraphs aren’t complete, finish them up! You need an outline for the last two. If, by any chance, you are stuck for a topic you can refer to your heart map.

© You may want to take a refresher and skim through your novel once more.

I’m really not sure if there’s any more, if there is please comment and enlighten us.

The generous honour of posting tomorrow has been bestowed upon Shanese. I wish you luck, you’ll do great!!

How to add label when posting

Step one put label before posting
then finish this and post!
If you have posted and forgot to add a label do this
Step one
go to edit post from your www.blogger.com/home (dashboard)
Step two
select the boxes for the posts that you wish to add to ONE PARTICULAR LABEL not all the ones that you want to add different labels to
then use the side bar named LABEL to acess the one you added to labels
sorry about the bad pictures

Please use labels.

please use labels so we can look and acess the posts easier I will post how to do it in a separate post. the posts we have are "Learning Logs, Other, Other blog stuff, Post order discussions"
Learning Log Friday January 6th

What we did:Today the class was in the library and we had to do reviews of how well other people (in your blog group) do on posting. Then we wrote down all the post we made and all the comments you have posted on other peoples posts. Then we all got in groups (the groups were the people who had the same book as you)and got web of different topic's ,two people got green card and two would get yellow. The people with the green would write down positive things about the web and the yellow would write negative things about the web.

Why we did it:
We did the reviews of the blog posts because,First the teacher needs to mark us and second to see how yourself and other do on the blogs so you can get better at writing the learning logs. The propose of the webbing thing was to get people to share more of there idea's and to get better at group work.
Connections/Reflections(by Fredrick, this is just a sample so you know how to write this, please do write your own Trevor)
I thought that the first part of our class, which was the blog critique, was productive for me and my group. We got through all of our critiques and the quality of the work was quite good. However the second part of class was not quite productive as we got quite off task and we did not get much done. I will leave the connections to you Trevor
homework:
post on your blogs(if it's your day)

Learing Log. Jan.4

What we did
Today in the first block, we started with the Geography Challenge practice rounds. We did 3 rounds on Canadian history, and world “people and places”. Some of the questions were quite hard. Next we finished viewing the video on history of the Middle Ages and take notes while watching it. It was a twenty minutes video and in it we learned about the early, high, and late Middle Ages. After that, we looked at our blog criteria because some of the recent blog posts were not up to standard. During second block, we went to the library to critique and look at our blog’s consistency and quality. First, we looked at who posted when, and who commented where. Next, we had to pick out two posts by
each of us. Then we had to critique it based on the criteria given in the previous block. We (in pairs or group of three) had to mark it out of five and give five reasons for that grade given.

Learning Intentions
We did the Geo Challenge to prepare us for the Geo Challenge that is coming up in two weeks. It also broadens your knowledge. We looked at the video because it introduces us to the new unit in history. It was also to practice our note taking skills. We looked at the blogs to refresh our memory of the criteria and to let us think about whether we have been following it or not. We checked for consistency because if someone in the group missed a lot of work then they can catch up. The critiquing was to let everyone know where they are at and what they should work on. It also lets the better bloggers to show and explain to those who are not as confident in the blogging how to write the post better.

Connection/Reflections
I think that today was quite interesting
day. First the Geography challenge was quite challenging yet fun as did not fail after trying, though I have never heard of some of the questions, especially Canadian history because I was not in Canada for three years. L These questions are actually quite useful because they tell you a
lot of interesting facts that I’ve never knew before. The video was an interesting one though it was quite quick and I had to rush through some of the points. The blogging part of our day was easy but time consuming because we had to really think about the five reasons. I am quite happy about the fact that our group is mostly consistent with our posting and commenting. Blogging is a really good way to share your ideas on the internet with everyone, not just your friends. It also lets other people look at your ideas and comment on them, whether it is agreeing or disagreeing.

Posting

Hi everyone.... I guess you probably noticed but i think we don't have today's (January 3) post. I single handedly gave this blog 4 views tonight! :)
Anyway...... what is the normal order for posting Fred? i noticed the little text box on the side bar.
Is there anyone who hasn't done a double block post yet?
