LEARNING LOG~Dec 13/2011
At the beginning of class today we changed our desks in groups. Ms.Lees gave the class a worksheet that we had to self evaluate and 6 books each group. The books were about the middle ages. We had to read the first 3 pages and evaluate what we read on to the sheet. On the sheet it had readability skills which was too easy, ok, somewhat challenging and challenging. Also on the sheet it had interest level which was not at all, somewhat interesting (could read), interesting and OMG have to read! Ms. Lees wanted a educational explanation why we chose what we think are readability was on each book and our interest level. We had to write our reasoning below. After we finished we had to rank the books from 1-6 the top books you would read to the lowest you would read.
Learning Intention
The learning intention was for Ms.Lees to find out what book is suitable for you. She is picking a book for each student to read for the Christmas holidays. We also had to stay focus and on task for the whole entire block in order to finish the sheet that was due in class today.
Reflections/Connections
Today I felt marvy because I really stayed on task today and didn't talk. I enjoyed reading all the books in the middle ages. There was a couple of books that I wanted to keep on reading ;)! I think this a good way for Ms.Lees to determine what book is suitable for each student.
Homework/Tips
- Finish your notes from the Pathway textbook that you have to complete at flex on Thursday at lunch
- Make sure your portfolio is ready for conferencing
- If you haven't finished your notes from the movie "First Knight" I suggest you should finish because it was due today

Learning Log Dec 7
What we did
Today, we watched a movie called “First Knight”. It was about the Camelot
and King Arthur. The main plot of the story was that this land beside Camelot
called Lyonnais. They were attacked by Prince Malagant, a former Round Table
Knight who left and wanted King Arthur’s position. The queen there, Lady
Guinevere was arranged to marry King Arthur, who was double her age. On the way
there, she was ambushed by Malagant’s troops. During the mayhem, her carriage
was jacked and she jumped out, only to be followed by some troops and was saved
by Lancelot, another main character. She reached Camelot safely and got
married. But soon Malagant captured Lady Guinevere. And yet again, Lancelot
saved her. King Arthur made Lancelot a Knight of the Round Table. Soon word
came in that Lyonnais was captured and King Arthur went and recaptured Lyonnais.
After the battle, Lancelot and Lady Guinevere kissed in secret as their secret
affection for each other… let’s just say the dam broke for them. Unfortunate
for them, King Arthur caught them in the act and they were trialed for treason.
During trial, Malagant suddenly attacked Camelot and interrupted the court. King
Arthur’s men fought back and defeated Malagant. Malagant was killed by
Lancelot, but King Arthur was killed in the process and he was sailed off to
his special resting place at the end of the movie. We had this worksheet to
fill out while we watched the film. I’ll attach some pictures of the worksheet.

Learning Intentions
This is a film set during the Middle Ages, which is what we are about
to learn about so it is quite useful. Also this is a practice for note-taking
skills as we need to take notes on three general info questions.
Connections/ reflections
I thought it was an interesting movies though there was umm… some
scenes that were not that appropriate… I’ve watched this film before and I knew
what was about to happen. This is a film that really, when you think about it,
does not spread the right message to the viewers. For example, Lancelot once
and once again attempted to make Lady Guinevere to express love for him. That
is a message saying that it is ok for force someone into an relationship.

Learning Log for December 6
Hi everyone! As you all probably know, today was supposed to be Trevor’s day, but his internet is down so I’ll be doing the Learning Log today. Sorry for the late post, I had to go to a friend’s house for a French project then go straight to piano. My apologies.
What We Did Today
When we came in today, the tables were all shifted to the sides of the room and so were the chairs. We moved them back, and listened to hear our names called to make sure that we had all handed in our Geography tests and that we hadn’t gotten them mixed up in another pile as some were lost. We then quieted down to watch a documentary titled “History of the Middle Ages” an intro of sorts to the upcoming Middle Ages/History unit that we will soon be covering in Humanities 8. We took notes throughout the 9 minutes and 39 seconds that we watched, pausing all the while through to give us some extra time to write down the important points that we heard. The narrator was a really fast speaker and covered topics so fast that it took me a while to figure out that we had moved on to the time of the High Middle Ages! We learned all about Charles the Great (a.k.a. Charlemagne), his vast empire, and of his stature. We were just starting on The Crusades when Ms. Lees paused the video and told us to get ready for some Canspell spelling bee practice. We went about halfway around the room when (the imaginary bell rang just like it used to for everything in elementary school) and it was time to leave for fourth block .
Learning Intention(s)
Today we had to put to use our note taking and making skills, jotting down notes as fast as we could, it seems we weren’t fast enough to record them without interrupting the flow of the video J. Remember that we are only supposed to take notes 10-20% of the time and the rest of the 80-90% is solely devoted to using only our ears. Spelling is for our own enrichment, mostly depending if you really want to improve and if you’re fine with where your spelling is at now. You can look back at my previous Learning Log (November 30) for other reasons on this topic. We had to stay focused and on topic, too, otherwise we wouldn’t get the vital information down on our papers.
Reflections and Connections
Today I was feeling in the middle of both muddy and marvy because it was really hard to keep up with the pace of the video and I probably muddled up a few dates too. Oh, well... I felt marvy because I felt like I knew how to distinguish the unimportant information from the important information. Overall I’m leaning more to the marvy side of the scale and with a bit more practice that I’m sure we’ll get, I think I should be okay!
Homework and Tips
-Canspell spelling bee is coming up really soon (Friday December 9th)
-If you haven’t finished your notes from Pathways you have to complete them at FLEX on Thursday at lunch... See you there! ;)
-Make sure that your portfolio is complete with samples of your work and Ms. Lees must-haves
That’s it I think, so I’ll see you all tomorrow at double block if not earlier. Sorry again for the late post.
Fredrick will post for tomorrow's double block... Best of luck Fredrick!

LEARNING LOG~ Dec.5/2011
For the entire class today we were working on our notes from the Pathway textbook. Pages 9-20 we had to take notes in the outline form. After we finished that we had to take notes in a web/map form from pages 21-29. And lastly we have to do note-taking in a Cornell layout. Since we were just working on Pathway notes we got to listen to music! I believe Ms.Lees only did one portfolio today. She said she would like to start scheduling times for conferencing.
Learning Intentions
The learning intention today was to see how we can be quiet and work on our time wisely instead of talking away to your neighbour beside you. We did the Pathway notes because its good to know the different forms or methods on how to take notes.
Reflections/Connections
I felt pretty marvy today because I really enjoyed some of the text that was in the Pathway textbook. It was interesting. I also liked the different forms/methods of note-taking because it can come in handy someday. I think I am more concentrated in class when I listen to music. I don't know why!?
