LEARNING LOG~Dec 13/2011
At the beginning of class today we changed our desks in groups. Ms.Lees gave the class a worksheet that we had to self evaluate and 6 books each group. The books were about the middle ages. We had to read the first 3 pages and evaluate what we read on to the sheet. On the sheet it had readability skills which was too easy, ok, somewhat challenging and challenging. Also on the sheet it had interest level which was not at all, somewhat interesting (could read), interesting and OMG have to read! Ms. Lees wanted a educational explanation why we chose what we think are readability was on each book and our interest level. We had to write our reasoning below. After we finished we had to rank the books from 1-6 the top books you would read to the lowest you would read.
Learning Intention
The learning intention was for Ms.Lees to find out what book is suitable for you. She is picking a book for each student to read for the Christmas holidays. We also had to stay focus and on task for the whole entire block in order to finish the sheet that was due in class today.
Reflections/Connections
Today I felt marvy because I really stayed on task today and didn't talk. I enjoyed reading all the books in the middle ages. There was a couple of books that I wanted to keep on reading ;)! I think this a good way for Ms.Lees to determine what book is suitable for each student.
Homework/Tips
- Finish your notes from the Pathway textbook that you have to complete at flex on Thursday at lunch
- Make sure your portfolio is ready for conferencing
- If you haven't finished your notes from the movie "First Knight" I suggest you should finish because it was due today

Learning Log Dec 7
What we did
Today, we watched a movie called “First Knight”. It was about the Camelot
and King Arthur. The main plot of the story was that this land beside Camelot
called Lyonnais. They were attacked by Prince Malagant, a former Round Table
Knight who left and wanted King Arthur’s position. The queen there, Lady
Guinevere was arranged to marry King Arthur, who was double her age. On the way
there, she was ambushed by Malagant’s troops. During the mayhem, her carriage
was jacked and she jumped out, only to be followed by some troops and was saved
by Lancelot, another main character. She reached Camelot safely and got
married. But soon Malagant captured Lady Guinevere. And yet again, Lancelot
saved her. King Arthur made Lancelot a Knight of the Round Table. Soon word
came in that Lyonnais was captured and King Arthur went and recaptured Lyonnais.
After the battle, Lancelot and Lady Guinevere kissed in secret as their secret
affection for each other… let’s just say the dam broke for them. Unfortunate
for them, King Arthur caught them in the act and they were trialed for treason.
During trial, Malagant suddenly attacked Camelot and interrupted the court. King
Arthur’s men fought back and defeated Malagant. Malagant was killed by
Lancelot, but King Arthur was killed in the process and he was sailed off to
his special resting place at the end of the movie. We had this worksheet to
fill out while we watched the film. I’ll attach some pictures of the worksheet.

Learning Intentions
This is a film set during the Middle Ages, which is what we are about
to learn about so it is quite useful. Also this is a practice for note-taking
skills as we need to take notes on three general info questions.
Connections/ reflections
I thought it was an interesting movies though there was umm… some
scenes that were not that appropriate… I’ve watched this film before and I knew
what was about to happen. This is a film that really, when you think about it,
does not spread the right message to the viewers. For example, Lancelot once
and once again attempted to make Lady Guinevere to express love for him. That
is a message saying that it is ok for force someone into an relationship.

Learning Log for December 6
Hi everyone! As you all probably know, today was supposed to be Trevor’s day, but his internet is down so I’ll be doing the Learning Log today. Sorry for the late post, I had to go to a friend’s house for a French project then go straight to piano. My apologies.
What We Did Today
When we came in today, the tables were all shifted to the sides of the room and so were the chairs. We moved them back, and listened to hear our names called to make sure that we had all handed in our Geography tests and that we hadn’t gotten them mixed up in another pile as some were lost. We then quieted down to watch a documentary titled “History of the Middle Ages” an intro of sorts to the upcoming Middle Ages/History unit that we will soon be covering in Humanities 8. We took notes throughout the 9 minutes and 39 seconds that we watched, pausing all the while through to give us some extra time to write down the important points that we heard. The narrator was a really fast speaker and covered topics so fast that it took me a while to figure out that we had moved on to the time of the High Middle Ages! We learned all about Charles the Great (a.k.a. Charlemagne), his vast empire, and of his stature. We were just starting on The Crusades when Ms. Lees paused the video and told us to get ready for some Canspell spelling bee practice. We went about halfway around the room when (the imaginary bell rang just like it used to for everything in elementary school) and it was time to leave for fourth block .
Learning Intention(s)
Today we had to put to use our note taking and making skills, jotting down notes as fast as we could, it seems we weren’t fast enough to record them without interrupting the flow of the video J. Remember that we are only supposed to take notes 10-20% of the time and the rest of the 80-90% is solely devoted to using only our ears. Spelling is for our own enrichment, mostly depending if you really want to improve and if you’re fine with where your spelling is at now. You can look back at my previous Learning Log (November 30) for other reasons on this topic. We had to stay focused and on topic, too, otherwise we wouldn’t get the vital information down on our papers.
Reflections and Connections
Today I was feeling in the middle of both muddy and marvy because it was really hard to keep up with the pace of the video and I probably muddled up a few dates too. Oh, well... I felt marvy because I felt like I knew how to distinguish the unimportant information from the important information. Overall I’m leaning more to the marvy side of the scale and with a bit more practice that I’m sure we’ll get, I think I should be okay!
Homework and Tips
-Canspell spelling bee is coming up really soon (Friday December 9th)
-If you haven’t finished your notes from Pathways you have to complete them at FLEX on Thursday at lunch... See you there! ;)
-Make sure that your portfolio is complete with samples of your work and Ms. Lees must-haves
That’s it I think, so I’ll see you all tomorrow at double block if not earlier. Sorry again for the late post.
Fredrick will post for tomorrow's double block... Best of luck Fredrick!

LEARNING LOG~ Dec.5/2011
For the entire class today we were working on our notes from the Pathway textbook. Pages 9-20 we had to take notes in the outline form. After we finished that we had to take notes in a web/map form from pages 21-29. And lastly we have to do note-taking in a Cornell layout. Since we were just working on Pathway notes we got to listen to music! I believe Ms.Lees only did one portfolio today. She said she would like to start scheduling times for conferencing.
Learning Intentions
The learning intention today was to see how we can be quiet and work on our time wisely instead of talking away to your neighbour beside you. We did the Pathway notes because its good to know the different forms or methods on how to take notes.
Reflections/Connections
I felt pretty marvy today because I really enjoyed some of the text that was in the Pathway textbook. It was interesting. I also liked the different forms/methods of note-taking because it can come in handy someday. I think I am more concentrated in class when I listen to music. I don't know why!?
Homework/Tips

Learning Log for November 30 (the last day of November)
Hello there everyone in “The City of The Wolves”!
What We Did Today
Today was a pretty quiet day due to numerous people who had committed to the Vow of Silence with the Global Issues Club. On this lovely Wednesday Humanities double block, we accomplished many things. For the first block, we did a quiet work time where we either got caught up with older work or started on note-taking and making. We had to take notes on passages from the Pathways textbook. From pages 9-20 we had to take notes in the outline form. Once we finished that, we had to take notes for pages 21-29 in a web/map form. And if you finished that, then you did note-taking in a Cornell layout (if you want to see the video clip of how to do a Cornell, it’s on Ms. Lees blog). We took a little stretch, worked a bit more and then it was time for break. At the beginning of second block, we spent some time spelling and practicing for the upcoming spelling bee that’s in a week or two (I forgot). Since there were some people doing the Vow of Silence we had to do a written bee instead, congrats to the girls on their win against the boys! J After all the excitement, we watched clips of how to take notes using the Cornell method, and how to do a mind map (something we will need to know as the year goes on). Again we settled down for a time of quiet work until the end of the day.
Learning Intentions
There are a few learning intentions today. For our quiet work time, I think it was so that we learn how to manage our free time wisely and not waste it all yapping with our friends although it may be a lot more fun than getting down to work. You really need to manage time wisely for the note-taking because we can’t take the Pathways textbook home to work on it. We need to practice our spelling not only because the spelling bee is up and coming, but because writing is used everywhere! Living in a country of two main languages (English and French) you kind of have to make yourself understood through writing and through oral communication, not only one and not the other. Learning to take notes is very useful because when we get into higher grades and into university, we need to keep track of what we’ve learned and we need to study for exams. The Cornell is a very useful way to study for tests... We have a test on Friday so you might want to take that into consideration. And also we post on this blog to make sure we are aware of our audience and not say anything that would reflect badly on ourselves or our school. Not that you should ever be saying bad stuff...
Reflections and Connections
Ms. Lees said that we don’t have to use the terms “muddy” and “marvy” but I like to use them because they’re a good way to explain how I feel about the time in Humanities class. Anyways, today I felt pretty marvy because I think I get the different styles of note-taking and I know how to use them although the Cornell somewhat confuses me a bit. I’m feeling pretty excited about the spelling bee too because I got perfect scores on both the written bees (sorry if this sounds like I’m bragging... Because I’m not) and I think I’m pretty solid with the grade eight word list. I mentioned how we need to use spelling in real life so I don’t need an “out of Humanities connection to the real world”.
Homework Helper
1. We have a Geography test coming up on Friday this week, so don’t forget to study for that. Here’s a tip you probably heard in class today “The more ways you see something, the more likely you are to retain that information” that may help you while you study. Fredrick has also kindly linked the info about the test to our blog.
2. You can use a Cornell to help you study and use the methods from the video clip on Ms. Lees’ blog.
3. Study for the spelling bee if you would like to become a serious competitor to represent our school at the Regional spelling bee.
Trevor, we have a math test tomorrow on Chapter 6, just in case you forgot J
On Friday, Trevor will post the lovely Learning Log! Good luck!

POSTING ORDER
Learning Log-Tuesday Nov 29
What we did
Today, at the beginning of class, Ms. Lees checked our homework which was the persuasive
exercises and the note-taking handout. After checking the homework and stamping
the ones that were completed, she gave us a “Questions and Answers Relation” or
“QAR” booklet for us to complete. In class, we were supposed to first finish
our note-taking handout if we did not complete it, then we were supposed to
finished the “QAR” booklet and finally, we were required to do an outline, mapping,
and Cornell note taking on some pages on the History textbook. You need to use
the text to decide how many outline you make per section. She did not complete
any more portfolio conferences, I think.
Learning Intentions
We did the homework check because Ms. Lees wants us to all finish our homework and also so
she knows who does their homework and who does not. We did the note-taking so
we know how to take proper notes so it would help us in review in all the
subjects as note take is sometimes a pain. The “QAR” was for two things. One,
we learned about the different types of questions on a textbook and just
questions in general and their difference. This is good for choosing how
detailed you want to answer a question. Two, we were doing this on our own with
no help from Ms. Lees so we are practicing self-study skills.
Reflections/Connections
I think that I am pretty “marvy” today because I can categorize all the questions and answer
them. Also I’ve finished my note-taking handout. The note-taking and the QAR
are useful in all our subjects because we need to take notes in most of them
and we are going to be writing tests for all of them as well.
1) Study for Geography Test on THIS Friday
(for details, refer to this site à click HERE) (It's also on Ms.Lee's blog)
2) Finish note-taking handout if you haven’t
3) Finish the “QAR” booklet
4) Study for Canspell
I am doing this for Trevor so you(Trevor) has to do Friday.
Sara will have the honor of doing tomorrow’s post!

Learning Log~incident
LEARNING LOG~Monday Nov.28/2011
Today Ms.Lees wanted to do conferences with some of the students. Some students were not finished so they got the whole block to catch up. While Ms.Lees was doing the conferences she gave us a task. We had to do the persuasive outline and paragraph. We also had to work on a notes-taking worksheet.
Learning Intentions/Why we did what we did
Ms.Lees wanted to do conferences with our portfolios so she can see what we improved on from the beginning of the year from today. The persuasive paragraph outline was a quick paragraph for us to write points before we write the persuasive paragraph. We did the persuasive paragraph to get to know how to write one of the basic paragraph types which is persuasive. The notes-taking sheet was to know the purpose of why we take notes.
Reflections/Connections
I felt "marvy" today because I had fun writing the persuasive paragraph. I got to prove my point why students should get a 4-day weekend. On the notes-taking sheet I liked reviewing what we learned earlier in the year and reading the purpose of why we take notes.
Homework
-Don't forget to post on your day
-Practise Canspell
-Persuasive outline and paragraph
-Notes-taking worksheet

Learning Log-Friday, Nov 25
What we did:
At the beginning of class
today, Ms. Lees asked us to take out yesterday's homework and show it to her.
She checked for completion of the heart map, the narrative paragraph, the two
descriptive exercises and the outline for the descriptive paragraph. If you did
not finish, then you had to finish it in class. If you did you helped out by
teaching those who don't understand how to do it. After that, we learned about
the explanatory paragraph which is the "how to and what is" kind of
writing. It gives information on something, whether it is how to do something,
an object or an idea. It need to be an “accurate, detailed, specific, and
organized” paragraph. Then we were assigned homework of writing an explanatory
paragraph and an outline for it. We were given the rest of class to complete
it.
Learning Intentions:
Ms. Lees checked our homework
to ensure that we did our homework and that if we did not we could finish it in
class. It is also beneficial for the people peer helping because to be able to
teach and put a skill in words needs more understanding than that of just being
able to do the task. Learning about the different types of paragraph is a necessity
because we will be using these types of writing whenever we are writing
anything. Explanatory is important because when we want to tell someone how to
do something we need to organize our paragraph in the form of a explanatory
paragraph.
Connections/Reflections:
I think that I am “marvy”
today because I finished all of the homework due today and I understand and can
explain how to write an explanatory paragraph. A place to use this skill
outside of Humanities would be Wikipedia as I’m sure you all know, it is an
online encyclopedia and it would need lots and lots of explanatory paragraphs.
Another place would be eHow, an “how to” website and it obviously needs lots of
explanatory paragraphs as well.
Homework:
1)Write a blog post (for some people)
2)Write an outline for the paragraph on the topics listed on the paragraph handout
3)Write an explanatory paragraph following your outline
Basketball Game
Today the grade 8 girls basketball team played their first game (it was an exhibition game) against Enver Creek. And we WON!! WOOHOO!!

Some opinions

Learning Log-Monday November 21
Today, we finished up organizing all of our portfolios leading up to the conferences that we will be having with Ms.Lees concerning our marks for this term. We also got the missing sheet of the Geography package and we were worked on that when we had finished our portfolios.
Why We Did What We Did/Learning Intentions
We did our portfolios so that we can see what we need to improve on over the course of this year, and to see our growth over a period of time (usually 1 term). Then we always know what we need to do to help the strengthen our weak spots. The Geography sheet that we got today was helping us to get more comfortable using an atlas and comparing different maps and information that we could find. We had to look through the different charts graphs and maps to find the specific thing we were looking for.
Reflections/Connections
I felt pretty "marvy" today because I got how to use the atlas for the purposes given on the question sheet. And if I didn't get it or needed help there was Ms. Lees and tons of other people that I could ask. I know that the southernmost tip of South America is called the Cape Horn and in the west, the archipelago is called the Queen Adelaide Archipelago. (Cool name, eh?)
I might have to use an atlas when I'm travelling to different countries planning my route and the destinations that I want to visit.
Homework
- Don't forget to post on your day (I almost forgot).
- We have in-class time to work on the South America worksheet tomorrow.
- If you haven't brought in posterboard, I would suggest that you fold your portfolio very soon...
That's it! Tomorrow Shanese will have the honour of posting the Learning Log.
