Learning Log-Friday, Nov 25

What we did:
At the beginning of class
today, Ms. Lees asked us to take out yesterday's homework and show it to her.
She checked for completion of the heart map, the narrative paragraph, the two
descriptive exercises and the outline for the descriptive paragraph. If you did
not finish, then you had to finish it in class. If you did you helped out by
teaching those who don't understand how to do it. After that, we learned about
the explanatory paragraph which is the "how to and what is" kind of
writing. It gives information on something, whether it is how to do something,
an object or an idea. It need to be an “accurate, detailed, specific, and
organized” paragraph. Then we were assigned homework of writing an explanatory
paragraph and an outline for it. We were given the rest of class to complete
it.
Learning Intentions:
Ms. Lees checked our homework
to ensure that we did our homework and that if we did not we could finish it in
class. It is also beneficial for the people peer helping because to be able to
teach and put a skill in words needs more understanding than that of just being
able to do the task. Learning about the different types of paragraph is a necessity
because we will be using these types of writing whenever we are writing
anything. Explanatory is important because when we want to tell someone how to
do something we need to organize our paragraph in the form of a explanatory
paragraph.
Connections/Reflections:

I think that I am “marvy”
today because I finished all of the homework due today and I understand and can
explain how to write an explanatory paragraph. A place to use this skill
outside of Humanities would be Wikipedia as I’m sure you all know, it is an
online encyclopedia and it would need lots and lots of explanatory paragraphs.
Another place would be eHow, an “how to” website and it obviously needs lots of
explanatory paragraphs as well.
Homework:
1)Write a blog post (for some people)
2)Write an outline for the paragraph on the topics listed on the paragraph handout
3)Write an explanatory paragraph following your outline
The person posting on Monday would be Shanese
